Planning & Writing in Plain Language

Planning & Writing cranks out great marketing communication plans and product for folks who need extra help doing so. I've spent years in big and small companies and have pretty much seen it all; the good, the mediocre, and the forgettable. I focus on the good. Work conditions that turn me--and most people-- on: speed (as in efficient, forward-moving, results-driven), commitment (do what you say you'll do) and working with folks who want their enterprise to stand out and not just run with the pack.

More about Maltby

  • Completed a journalism internship with a daily paper in Oklahoma. According to a Phillips Petroleum PR Director, it was the "worst daily paper in the country." But I learned much. Learned about writing leads that pop, about business vs. editorial conflicts, and learned much from a crusty old sports reporter who seemed half nuts but delivered pearls of wisdom and good cheer every day.

For entertainment during that summer in Oklahoma, we news interns mixed up screwdrivers on Friday nights and sat in lawn chairs on the roof of my downtown hole-of-an-apartment and watched cars go by below. About one car per 20 minutes.  It was our version of Friday Night Lights.

Smoked cigarettes daily that summer. Nearly everyone in the newsroom smoked. I wanted to be a tough, smokin' Oklahoman. I quit as soon as I left to return to college. All in all, a great summer (but stupid choice on the cigs. Kids, don't try this at home).

  • Sat across the desk from Marshall Loeb, editor of Fortune magazine at the time. His "green screen" editing computer was a relic in the age of electronic publishing. But he still produced a mighty magazine.

  • Rode in a limo by myself with The Right Honorable Lady Margaret Thatcher (with a driver and a Scotland Yard body guard in the front seats). The former British prime minister was dead tired (it was 1:30 a.m.) but still partook in cheerful conversation about African agriculture.  A pro through and through.

  • During a recent business trip to Athens, Georgia, took a detour to Macon and prayerfully sat on the front porch of an abandoned, dilapidated, Tudor house. This was the communal, song-writing headquarters of the Allman Brothers from 1969 to 1971.
